Robert Bosch Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI)  has launched the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI) at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. CeRAI was inaugurated by Hon. Shri. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology and Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The inauguration took place in IIT Madras on 27 April 2023. 

The institute organized the inaugural CeRAI workshop on responsible AI, as part of the launch program, on 15 May 2023. Abhishek Singh, MD & CEO of Digital India Corporation, President & CEO of NeGD delivered the keynote address during the event.  

The Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI) is a virtual interdisciplinary research center at IIT Madras. The center envisions being a premier research center for fundamental and applied research in Responsible AI with immediate impact in deploying AI systems in the Indian ecosystem. 

The center aims to pursue research in the domains of Ethical and Responsible AI and become the standard body in the country to recommend guidelines and policies to make deployable AI models/ systems more accountable, explainable and responsible. 

Presently, CeRAI covers three major research themes: 

• Making AI understandable. 
• Safe AI 
• AI and Society. 

The center is conducting research projects on various topics on AI and ethics in Indian context, Ethical and explainable AI in FinTech applications, Explainable GI endoscopy procedure assessments, human-in-the-loop, legal AI and many more.  

Balaraman Ravindran Professor, Dept. of CSE, IIT Madras, RBCDSAI, IIT Madras will be head of the center. The aim of the center is to focus on making AI more understandable and interpretable through techniques on Explainable AI, Interpretable AI and human-in-the-loop learning.
