The South Korean multinational conglomerate Samsung is reportedly planning to develop its own ChatGPT-like AI tool to assist its employees in coding and thereby boost productivity. However, this AI service is decided to be built for internal usage only so that the company can supervise activities to ensure safety. The Economist Korea reported that multiple employees of Samsung’s Korea-based semiconductor business leaked sensitive information to ChatGPT, which could be a big concern in terms of security. Samsung had once banned ChatGPT on its servers, but later they reversed the decision to check its acceptance among the employees. However, it is reported that the company is planning to re-introduce the ban after workers fed sensitive information to the chatbot.
According to the report, one employee tried fixing a code bug using ChatGPT, while another employee tried the same for a different code. Finally, the company executive stepped in after the third employee asked the AI to summarise meeting notes. The report read, “Employee C converted the contents of the meeting recorded on his smartphone into a document file through the Naver Clova application and then entered it into ChatGPT. The purpose is to request the preparation of meeting minutes”.
Soon the company found out that the employees were using the ChatGPT and sharing sensitive information that was forbidden. The company later circulated a warning for the workers that data gets stored in external servers, and these chatbots can later replicate information in future. Even the ChatGPT creator, Sam Altman, has said once that sharing crucial information may subject to further complications as they are not able to delete specific prompts from the history.
The report further added that Samsung is now of the opinion that Generative AI can change the semiconductor ecosystem for good. Previously, the company conducted an online seminar where all the executives discussed the emergence of ChatGPT and the future created by Generative AI. Moreover, there needs to be further clarity about whether the company has started working on it. Samsung already provides its users with AI services like Bixby on its smartphones, similar to Google Assistant on Android and Siri on iPhones.
