Snapdeal, a prominent e-commerce platform, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology’s language translation platform, Bhashini.

Bhashini was launched under the National Language Translation Mission (NLTM) and announced in the Indian government’s 2021-22 budget. The platform aims to improve access to online services in various local Indian languages.

According to Bhashini’s project website, its goal is to harness AI and emerging language technologies, such as GPT, to provide all Indians with accessible internet and digital services in their languages. Additionally, it seeks to increase the availability of content in Indian languages. Bhashini operates as an open-data and open-source software capable of translating text and video.

Bhashini has a track record of successful partnerships. In October last year, it signed an MoU with the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) to expand digital financial services to users in their native languages. In January, Bhashini partnered with the business automation platform UiPath. These collaborations showcase Bhashini's potential and its commitment to digital inclusion.

Furthermore, Bhashini is being utilized by Microsoft’s generative AI chatbot, Jugalbandi, which helps people access information on government schemes, facilities, and procedures in their native languages.

The collaboration between Snapdeal and Bhashini is expected to further these efforts by using AI to bridge the digital divide and promote greater inclusion in the digital economy.
