In a new initiative, the Supreme Court of India created history by using AI software to start live transcription of hearings last week. The apex court used the technology developed by a Bangalore-based start-up named Technology Enabled Resolution (TERES). The AI model was used to translate court arguments into text during live proceedings of the constitution bench hearing on the Maharashtra political controversy.

Congratulating the Chief Justice of India, minister of Law and Justice of India, Kiran Rijiju, tweeted, "Hon'ble Chief Justice of India Justice DY Chandrachud has taken a great initiative in the Supreme Court by using AI to transcribe hearings. As a result, the Supreme Court officially publishes the transcript of the Constitution Bench proceedings".

The legal expert supported the pilot project due to its strategy to begin the modernization of the judiciary by forming a legal transcription. Using an AI model will aid in increasing accountability and bring openness by ensuring accurate documentation of the statements.

TRES was founded by three techies from Bangalore, Vikas Mahendra, his brother Vinay Mahendra and Badarivishal Kinhal. The trio are technical graduates working on their start-up.

According to Vikas Mahendra, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, asked them if they could do transcription for the constitution court on a trial basis. The judicial record was first made public on Tuesday, 21st February 2023. The AI system received positive responses from the high courts of Kerala, Odisha and Karnataka.

The developers believe that transcribing AI is a win-win situation for all the parties involved in the hearing. This will pressure attorneys to present their cases with caution and carefulness and ensure a wise selection of words. It will also monitor other prohibited practices for judges, like using sarcasm.

The model can streamline multi-day hearings and make it easier for attorneys to re-look at their notes.
