Indian Army has deployed 140 AI-based surveillance systems to get live feed on the Pakistan and China border. The step is taken to utilize technology to strengthen border security.

The Line of Control with Pakistan and Line of Actual Control with China now have world-class surveillance systems.

The systems include high-resolution cameras, sensors, UAV feed and radar feed which are collated and applied through AI. AI will enable the detection of intrusions at borders and the classification of targets. A high-tech system is used to reduce the requirement for manual monitoring considerably. AI will allow remote target detection and various targets, be it a man or machine. All AI-oriented machines are tuned for interpretation, change and anomaly detection and even intrusions at the borders, besides reading drone footage. This will reduce the necessity for manual monitoring.

The units can be used for real-time social media monitoring and even the prediction of adversary actions. These projects are part of the 12 AI domains identified by the National Task Force of Technology. The AI-based suspicious vehicle recognition system has been deployed in the Northern and Southern commands. This software has been deployed to generate intelligence in counter-terrorism operations.

The Army has also set up an AI centre at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow. They have collaborated with academia and the Indian industry as the RDO for such projects. Besides, they are looking at 5G technology for supporting operations on the battlefield. The high bandwidth connectivity is suited for frontline troop communication.

A joint study was carried out on implementing 5G in the armed forces, which the Corps of Signals led.
