While speaking at the AI Conference organised by the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), Delhi High Court Judge Justice Rajiv Shakdher remarked that we should look at technology cautiously and not give up on it. Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) is India's apex body of law firms.
Referring to the Mata Case, the first case of AI hallucinations, Justice Rajiv Shakdher highlighted the dual nature of technology, possessing both strengths and weaknesses akin to human beings. He stressed on the importance of lawyers equipping themselves with sufficient knowledge about technology to ask the right questions. "As lawyers who defend the rights of the marginalised, you must ask these critical questions—what will technology do to assist us but not take away our power of critical thinking?".
He advocated for the establishment of a framework to regulate the use of technology in a controlled environment.
Justice Prathiba M Singh, who delivered the keynote address at the conference, emphasised the necessity for legal reforms to encompass the regulation of AI-related technologies. She warned that without such reforms, our laws could become obsolete in the face of advancing technology. "Technology is already on a marathon. It shows no signs of stopping", she added.
Justice Singh pointed out AI's limitations, saying that the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated data are still in the grey area. She said that AI could not substitute either human intelligence or the human element in the adjudicatory process, and at best, the tool could be utilised for a preliminary understanding or preliminary research and nothing more.
The AI Conference by SILF, under the presidency of Dr Lalit Bhasin, saw the participation of 12 national and international law firms and 44 speakers, including experts from the legal, tech, industry, and policy domains.
