As Artificial Intelligence technologies advance exponentially and get deeply ingrained in our daily lives, more and more concerns and challenges emerge that requires coordinated global responses. And that is where AI standards become a critical element, as it can offer an institution for coordination, and ensure AI products made around the world are interoperable.

According to the Future of Humanity Institute, Oxford University, “AI standards ensure that management processes for cybersecurity, quality assurance, environmental sustainability, and more are consistent no matter where they happen. Standards provide the institutional infrastructure needed to develop new technologies, and they provide safety procedures to do so in a controlled manner. Standards can do all of this, too, in the research and development of artificial intelligence.”

Currently, with the AI and policy community across the globe yet to confirm on global standards, works are in progress by two leading standard bodies ISO and IEEE. Global standard on AI can provide rules and promote healthy competition across the globe for the next phase of AI development.

The report on AI Standards is a comprehensive analysis on standards and developments across the globe and seeks to provide a bird's eye view of policy adoption by some of the prominent economies in the world in the space of AI. The report analyses the developments in these countries on the five broad parameters, which are Definition of AI, Ethics and Human Rights, Intellectual Property, Privacy and Consent and Transparency. The countries included in this study are India, USA, China, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Russia, Denmark, Australia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Finland, Sweden, Spain, Norway, Netherlands, UAE, along with Hong Kong and the European Union. The report has a maturity index by which progress made by each country is evaluated in the particular parameter.
