Since the advent of AI, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has been the captain of India's AI journey. The year 2022 was no different. Here, we are looking back to MeitY's AI initiatives of 2022.  

Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022: The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on November 18 released the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022. The purpose of this Act is to provide for the processing of digital personal data in a manner that recognizes both the right of individuals to protect their personal data and the need to process personal data for lawful purposes.   

Later this year, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw moved a motion in the Lok Sabha to withdraw the bill, which passed with a voice vote, and the bill was withdrawn.

Draft National Data Governance Framework: India is accelerating towards an increasingly digitized and data-driven economy. With increasing digitization and engagement, the volume of data is also increasing exponentially, providing opportunities for better governance, service delivery and innovation in sectors critical for societal transformation.  

National Data Governance Framework Policy aims to enhance access, quality, and use of data, in line with the current and emerging technology needs of the decade.

YUVAi: MeitY announced the new edition of Responsible AI for Youth 'YUVAi- Youth for Unnati and Vikas with AI program, this year. The programs aimed to address the growing skills gap and build digital readiness among the next generation.   

YUVAi aims to foster a deeper understanding of AI, equipping school students from classes 8th to 12th across the nation with AI skills and empowering them to become human-centric designers and users of AI. In addition, the program offers an applied learning experience for students to understand and identify how AI technology can tackle critical problems and lead to the inclusive development of the nation.

Digital India Bhashini: Digital India BHASHINI is India's AI-led language translation platform. The Government wants to integrate startups into the process of innovation, development and consumption of technology. The Bhashini Platform will make AI and NLP resources available to MSMEs, startups and individuals. The platform is interoperable and will catalyze the entire digital ecosystem.   

 MoS MeitY Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated, "It is an important part of PM Modi's vision to provide opportunities for Indian youth and connect the country". He added that while BaratNet and 5G will catalyze 'connecting all Indians' to the internet goal, Bhashini will ensure citizens consume the internet and Digital government service in their languages.

Aadhaar Mitra: UIDAI launched its new AI/ML-based chatbot Aadhaar Mitra this year. The new chatbot comes with enhanced features like - checking Aadhaar enrolment/update status, tracking of Aadhaar PVC card status, information on enrolment center location, etc. People can also register their grievances and track them using Aadhaar Mitra. UIDAI has a robust grievance redressal mechanism comprising UIDAI HQ, its regional offices, the technology center and engaged contact centre partners. It has been continuously striving to make Aadhaar holders' experience progressively better.  

According to MeitY, a resident-centric coordinated approach enables UIDAI to resolve nearly 92 per cent of CRM grievances within a week.
