India is emerging as a world leader in AI owing to its vast knowledge base and research capabilities. AI and data is poised to contribute about US$500 billion to India’s GDP by 2025. Listed below are the top 5 universities for AI research in India.

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi: IIT-D has established an independent “School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI)” on its campus in September 2020, and the admissions to its PhD program will begin from the January 2021 cycle. PG level degree courses to be offered by the ScAI are being planned. IIT-D currently offers AI and ML courses in the five-year dual degree program with the students entitled to both B.Tech. and M.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering at the end of the program. Data Analytics & Intelligence Research (DAIR) is a fledgeling research group at IITD-CSE which has delved into building applications of national and international importance.
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay: Centre for Indian Language Technology (CFILT) lab at Department of Computer Science and Engineering undertakes research in the field of NLP and AI. The department also offers various AI courses under the B.Tech., B.Tech. Dual Degree, M.Tech., M.Tech. Dual Degree and Ph.D. programmes.
  • Indian Institute of Technology, Madras: The Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (RBC-DSAI) was founded in August 2017 at IIT Madras with a vision to expand and further the research, education and outreach activities in the field. The research conducted at RBC-DSAI spans both basic research, addressing fundamental challenges in AI, as well as applied research projects in various fields ranging from finance to health care. IIT-Madras scientists launched AI4Bharat to boost AI innovation and help build AI solutions to address local problems in agriculture, healthcare and other sectors. IIT Madras has a strong interdisciplinary programme in Data Science and AI which is offered as a part of the five-year dual degree program.
  • Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru: Machine Learning Special Interest Group Research at IISc is housed in Department of Computer Science and Automation. The Machine And Language Learning (MALL) Lab at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore is a group of researchers, engineers, and students from the Department of Computational & Data Sciences (CDS) and the Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA).
  • Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani: The department of Computer Science and Information Technology at BITS Pilanis was one of the first of its kind in the country. It offers a full time Ph.D. programme Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning & Data Mining. BITS Pilani houses Advanced Data Analytics & Parallel Technologies Laboratory (ADAPT).
